The Main Function of a Communication Protocol

In information technology or ICT, a communication protocol is defined as a set of rules or standards for transferring data or information. Data can be transferred between computers, using protocols. In other words, a protocol is a set of guidelines or rules that must be complied with or obeyed before communication between computing devices can take place. With the use of protocols, communication can be easily synchronized.
The implementation of a protocol can be carried out via software or hardware.

The main function of the communication protocol is that it allows information to be packed and transmitted from the sending device to a receiving device.
A very important function of the communication protocol is the transmitting and exchange of data across interconnected networks such as the Internet. Interconnected networks such as the Internet are linked by a protocol standard known as TCP/IP. TCP/IP is a combination of two protocols. TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol and IP stands for Internet Protocol.

Both protocols work together to form the Internet Protocol Suite known as TCP/IP. This set of communication protocols are used for communication over the Internet and other similar interconnected networks.
