Computer networks utilizes the OSI model.  OSI is short for Open Systems Interconnection model. The OSI model has seven standard layers. Each layer carries out a set of related communication function that enable the layer above or below it to receive or carry out it own function. In other words, a layer request services from the layer below it and in turn provides service to the layer above it.

The seven layers of OSI model are:

  1. Application
  2. Presentation
  3. Session
  4. Transport
  5. Network
  6. Data-Link
  7. Physical
