The term,’ Internet’ is commonly used interchangeably with the term, ‘World Wide Web’. However, in theory, there is actually a distinction between the two.
The Internet can be described as a huge or wide area network that links many of computers all over the world. Information is passed through the Internet with the aid of various languages referred to as Protocols. The Internet is used for electronic mailing (email) which makes use of Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), FTP (file transfer protocol), Usenet news groups and IM (instant messaging).
The World Wide Web (WWW) on the other hand, makes it possible for people to gain access to information via the Internet. The web is a large portion of the Internet; it is information sharing system that is part of the Internet. The web utilizes Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) which is just one of many protocols or languages used with the Internet technology making it possible to transfer data.
The web uses browsers to access web documents which are referred to as web pages. Example of browsers is the Internet Explorer and the Netscape, Google Chrome and Firefox. The web pages are linked together with the aid of hyperlinks and the pages may contain graphics, sound text or video.
