In this article you will find out more about the advantages and disadvantages of a Network

Advantages of a Computer Network

Rapid Method of Sharing Files and Information
With the use of Networks, information can be transferred and shared with speed. Also, it is possible to share and exchange information worldwide in minutes. The use of network for file and information sharing enables organisations to cut costs and save time. Removable disks are not needed to transfer data over a network.

Resource Sharing
Networks enable resource sharing thereby conserving resources.  Peripheral devices such as printers, plotters, CD-ROM carousels modems, fax machines, scanners and scanners can be shared among users. This is not possible with a stand-alone computer system.

Centralized Management and Sharing of Software Applications
A very good advantage is that networking eliminates the need to install application software on individual machines. Computers need to run different functional application programs such as word processors, presentation applications, spreadsheets and other similar programs. It will be extremely cumbersome, costly and time consuming to install programs on all individual computers in a large or moderate organisation. Software applications can be installed on a server computer and accessed by all other computers (clients) attached to the network. This means that software licenses can be easily administered; backups and updates can also be done more easily.

Remote and Flexible Access
A network allows flexibility and access to remote computers. Data and files can be accessed from any computer connected to the LAN or WAN, as the case may be. This means that, in an organisation for example, work can be carried out from any location within a company building, from home or abroad.

Security
With the use of networks, access rights and privileges to information and data can be set for different categories of authorized users. Authorized access to files, folders and program can be restricted with the aid of usernames and passwords.

Electronic Mail
Network provides electronic mail (e-mail) systems. E-mail is a way of exchanging messages by electronic means. This is a fast, cost effective and convenient means of communication across a network, which can be local or worldwide.

Cost
Sharing of files, software and resources helps to save cost and time.

Workgroup

Network allows users to form a workgroup and work on projects concurrently. Many users can work on a project using the same software application simultaneously.

Disadvantages of a Network

Installation Cost
The initial cost of installing a network can be quiet expensive as specialized devices, equipments and cables are needed for the installation. Also, there is a need for well trained technicians to install the network.  For this reason, some small organisations cannot afford it.

Maintenance of a Network
For a network to work and function effectively there is a need to either employ technicians or contract out the maintenance work. Many small or medium organisations may find it difficult to maintain a network after installation due to lack of proper budgeting or funds.

Server Failure
If something goes wrong with the server computer, the entire network will stop operating. In a critical case, this may lead to loss of vital data and information.

Broken Network Cable
Networks are linked with cables. One broken cable can halt the whole network
