Virtual Classroom

A virtual classroom is an online learning environment which enables teaching and learning to take place synchronously and asynchronously. The use of virtual classrooms is a major innovation in e-learning or web-based learning.

In a synchronous setting, teachers and students engage in real time by using technologies such as Chats, teleconferencing and videoconferencing. The level of engagement depends on the type of technology being used. Commonly used applications are Skype, Facebook, and other bespoke learning environments.

In an Asynchronous setting, the teaching and learning do not take place in real time. A virtual classroom in an asynchronous setting is based on self-directed learning in which students can access instructions delivered by the teacher at different times and at students’ own pace. Examples of Information technology – IT tools used for this type of virtual learning are forums and group discussion boards.

Virtual classrooms can be accessed from home and this eliminates the needs to travel as well as reduce cost and save time. In most cases there is a need to have a range of hardware and software installed on a personal computer system. A very welcome advantage is its accessibility to students with disabilities.
